Peace seems to be the most hackneyed word of recent times. More than often we see people use this word in demonstrations, articles and political campaigns. People rather leaders have stereotyped peace according to their political needs. Peace just doesn’t have a single dimension in human life. This essay is not about the so called peace of today. It’s not about the peace that every body’s fighting about. It’s about the different dimensions of peace in daily life.
“Peace hath her victories no less renowned than war”
We, the Homo sapiens are fond of peace. Peace is the normal condition of mind. When our mind goes through turmoil, which is an abnormal state. Men naturally desire for peace. Though men desire for peace, yet they are sometimes forced to go to war. It’s the worldly needs that forces men to war. Poverty, hunger, money, power, superiority, religion are some of the ingredients that are needed to cook a war. Someone has rightly said that-
“Even poor peace is better than a good war”
Blessed is the man who enjoys peace in daily life. To have a serene and peaceful domestic life is one of the greatest blessings in life. When we talk about peace generally, we neglect the fact that a peaceful domestic life is as much important. Life would be miserable if we have no peace of mind at home. Quarrels and tension in the family would make one upset. This would affect one’s creativity and concentration. As a result one cannot work well.
Peace in domestic life is not enough. Besides that we also need peace in civic life. It’s important that there be peace in the town or country where we reside. In a society we have to live with people, people who have different attitudes and social conduct. In our community we have to deal with our neighbors. If we are not at peace with them we cannot perform our civic duties well. We cannot live in peace and safety at home if there be riots and other troubles.
When we talk about peace today, it’s more about nations exhibiting their weapons, war strategy and superiority against a bunch of self proclaimed warriors; which they may be in their own right but to the world they are terrorists. It’s not a world war that people dread about these days. It’s not about engaging in war for building empires by expanding borders either; rather it’s more serious of a problem. Global terrorism has been threatening world peace for quite a period of time. Like a plague it is sweeping the globe and now only a handful of countries actually practice the real peace.
Peace is the mother of civilization and war is the demon of destruction. Civilization cannot progress if there be no peace in the country or the world. The different aspects of civilization like literature, science, art, industry etc. flourishes in times of peace. If we study the history of the world or a country for that matter we find rapid progress in the economy and industrial sectors only in times when there was much peace in the world as compared to today. On the contrary, during World War I and World War II, the world suffered its worst consequences which hindered development as a whole across the world. We also cannot forget the September 11th plane crash in to the two towers of the World Trade Centre that soaked a nation into tears and terrorized the world for almost a year. The consequences it had on world economy was evident. The world economy took a head first plunge downward in to oblivion for some time. People and the world economy took time to recover from it but the memories still gives us a chill down the spine.
The mind can work well only when it is not disturbed by anything and as a result the country and the world as a whole do well. Industry and commerce thrive when there is peace in the world. In a word, peace promotes the growth of civilization in all its branches. In our daily life we find interest, energy and pleasure in doing our work in times of peace. We are free from anxieties. Monetary resources can be utilized for the betterment of the country only when there is peace. In times of war a country burns up most of its energy and resources in fighting and defending the country.
With more and more nations becoming infected by global terrorism and war, it’s hard to imagine a world of peace in the days to come. Efforts of a handful of human right organizations and countries are more than appreciable for their valuable contributions in an attempt of making this world a peaceful place to live in; but in days to come it’ll be not enough. We are bound to have a shortage of helping hands in the near future. If the worst comes to the worst then life would become a living hell. So its time now for all of us to work for the restoration of peace in the world. The statesmen, diplomat and people responsible should try and figure out ways other than war. They should ask them selves that if peace is what they want then why do they fight for it and remember that they can earn glory by doing things nobler because:-
“Peace hath her victories no less renowned than war”
