Attitude is perhaps one of the least talked of topic. Literally the word means behavior or showing opinion. To be precise it is a settled mode of thinking. More than often we tend to take our own attitude for granted, not knowing the consequences that it would have in our personal, social and professional life.
Attitude is the foundation of success. No matter what one does and where one goes, regardless of whom one is one’s social relationships and professional status will be affected by one’s attitude. Attitude in one way or the other affects the amount of success one attains in a given period of time. Studies have shown that when a person gets a job or a promotion, 85% of the time it is because of his attitude and only 15% of the time because of intelligence or knowledge.
“Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude towards it, for that determines our success or failure.”
- Norman Vincent Peale
It’s not just any attitude that contributes to one’s success. When we talk about attitude and success, it’s the positive attitude we are talking about. We are talking about an optimistic approach to events and its consequences. A negative attitude lessens the chances of one’s success. It is a disease. Our attitude determines how we look at life. To a positive thinker attitude can be a ladder to success. To a negative thinker it can be a hurdle.
Humans can actually alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. If we turn the pages of history, and contemplate the life of successful and great men we will find that most of them were strong minded people with a positive attitude towards their work and life. A place in history has only been possible for them because they altered their attitudes of mind towards achieving their ultimate goals that has benefited mankind in one way or the other.
It is necessary to build a positive attitude for success. To build a positive attitude we should alter the way our personal mind works. We should start looking at life positively. We should count our blessings rather than our problems. We should stop criticizing people and circumstances. We should spend so much time in improving ourselves that we have no time left to criticize others. The grass will always look greener on the other side until and unless we start to realize that opportunities lie beneath our feet, what we need to do is utilize them. We should live life as it comes and dwell in the present. Learning from the past, living in the present and not worrying about the future will eventually lead to happiness and happiness will result in a positive attitude. We should make ourselves strong minded people and we can do this by talking about health, happiness, prosperity and achievements. Being thankful for things that we have and appreciating the things that others have contribute a great deal towards building a positive attitude. Failure and competition can result in a negative attitude but one should always take failure as another step towards success; and we should limit competition within ourselves; if we start looking at other people and indulge too much in competition with them then we’ll never be content because there will always be people who are better than us, we have to accept the truth. Discontentment can lead to unhappiness and unhappiness to discontentment; this will make us negative and lessen our chances of success. This does not mean that we should stop improving ourselves and stop competing; rather we should realize our limits.
A positive attitude will make one pleasant and friendly amongst his friends, colleagues and relatives and create an environment that is more conducible to success. A positive attitude builds a pleasing personality that is energizing. It will inspire people who are around and helps one to become an influential member of the society and asset of the country. It increases one’s enjoyment of life and assures his or her success. On the contrary people with negative attitudes have a hard time sticking to relationships and making friends. He becomes an obstacle to himself. Negative attitude will create an unpleasant environment at home and work place leading to failure.
Thus proving beyond doubt that attitude is a vital factor that contributes to one’s success or failure. On the whole it affects the society and the country as well. So it’s no more a matter of a single person’s approach to life but a matter of a country’s advancement towards being successful in terms of economic and social development. Only when the citizens of a country are willing and enthusiastic about a better future they can work harder to uplift their life, which incorporates building a positive attitude. All this will result in the development of the nation. But it’s easier said than done. Attitude is not something that we are born with. We develop our attitudes as we grow up and this is affected by the social environment in which we grow up and also the education that we receive from schools, colleges and our elders. By education I mean value based education. Educating people is not enough they should be able to utilize it in the best of ways. We humans tend to resist change; so it’ll be hard for those who have a negative attitude to change. But life’s a challenge and we all should take it, as it is for success and betterment of our life and country. So let’s do it now and not save it for tomorrow:-
“He slept beneath the moon
He basked beneath the sun
He lived a life of going to do
and died with nothing done”
- James Albery
